Willow off to the Holden Scramble National Final
I was invited to play in the Holden Scramble Regional Final held at Cobram Barooga Golf Club last Monday. Travis Merritt from Howlong Golf Club had 3 teams qualify and needed a pro to play with one of the groups.
I met the team I was going to be playing with 30 minutes before we were due to tee off. Our team was Belinda (H’cap 18), Damien (H’cap 17), Mike (H’cap 1) and Gio (H’cap 1) who are all members of Thurgoona Golf Club in Albury and had qualified at Howlong.
We teed of the 8th hole on the old course and got off to a sluggish start… Only 1 under after 3 holes. We put a string of birdies together and then things fired right up when we got to the Par 5 18th Hole. After a cracking drive from Belinda, Gio managed to put his ball on the green around 50 feet from the hole and we managed to make the putt for an eagle 3.
We stood on the short par 4 1st tee still pumped up from making eagle and Mike managed to smash his drive just over the back edge of the green. Damien calmly lined his putt from off the back edge and it never looked like missing for a 2 and consecutive eagles. We managed to keep out of trouble and kept holing putts. Our final score of 56 (-16) for a nett 52.3 was just good enough to edge out one of the other Howlong Teams who finished second on the day.
Now the rule is, the host professional is entitled to the professional position to attend the National Final. Travis very graciously informed me that I could stick with the team for our trip to the National Final.
The Holden Scramble National Final is held at the Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. We depart Melbourne on Friday 7th December and return on Tuesday 11th December. The top two placed teams at the National Final will compete in a Home and Away, Ryder Cup Style Fixture against the Chinese Scramble Champions next year.
